Peromyscus gossypinus (Cotton mouse), 03 July 2012

If there was any question to why Sam the Gray Rat Snake was so willing to suffer repeat human encounters, here’s the probable answer: these are cotton mice, Peromyscus gossypinus, photographed in the same little area of the Grand Bay boardwalk trail where I spotted Sam the Gray on a number of occasions. These two bitty mice must look just about snack-sized from Sam the Gray’s perspective. I’ve seen a decent number of these mice along the boardwalk trail at various times.

I’m no rodent expert and probably don’t know nearly as much about them as Sam the Gray does, but I’m still pretty sure of this identification. I went through Moody Air Force Base and Grand Bay / Banks Lake ecological reports and cross-checked the named/listed rodent species. The cotton mouse (not to be confused with cottonmouth) was definitely the top hit. They are also apparently very abundant in this region

My, how the snakes at Grand Bay must adore these little mice!
